Hey good lookin, what’cha got cookin’?

Lots of business progress I hope!

Now, just before we get into what’s behind door number 6…am I the only one who thought little hooks like the one in the picture above were for tying up dogs rather than locking bikes to??  I cycle quite a lot and have never realised that’s what they were for!

Anyway, door number 6!

We’ve looked at tendencies, The Continuum Concept, business software basics, getting your body moving to get your thoughts moving and how to fix your facebook page…starting to feel a bit overwhelming?

Running a small business, or managing a household or both often means neverending tasks to keep track of and work through, a job which often feels impossible.  Never fear!  Behind today’s door is Getting Things Done!  Getting Things Done (GTD) is a system for identifying, organising and actually working through the myriad projects most of us are working on at any one time.

The simple explanation is that you have a big brain dump session where you use a mind map to get everything out of your head and onto paper (and I mean everything…walk the dog, have a shower, contact this client, rebuild website etc etc).  You then group all the tasks into projects – ‘website’, ‘new client’, ‘home’ and so on.  Next you separate out what is a ‘current project’ (something you are working on right now or plan to be) and those which are ‘someday / maybe’ (something that is taking up space in your brain but not something you can or want to be focussing on just now).

For each of the ‘current projects’ you now need to identify the ONE next action you can / need to take and add that to your ‘next action’ list.  This is your day to day working list.  Each time you cross off an action, you replace it with just the next action you can take for that project.

So, to recap, it’s basically a series of lists enabling you to both prioritise what is most important and also break down each task into smaller ones which you can actually action right now.

– Mindmap
– Current Projects vs Someday / Maybe
– Next Action

The complete system goes into more detail, the above is just the basics to get you started if you think it might be helpful.  More information here:
