HUMAN SYSTEMS:
HUMANS AS SYSTEMS
THE SOUTAR SCHEMA
Humans as systems
Behaviour is an output.
At every scale — a person, a relationship, a team, an organisation, a society — there is a system producing it.
That system runs two mechanisms. One processes faster than conscious thought, primed and filtered by everything that came before it. The other evaluates and decides — but only ever with what the first one passes through.
Both mechanisms select the same way: the option with the lowest net cost, when all costs are accounted for.
This is not a flaw. It is how systems work.
The Soutar Schema is a mapped model of those mechanisms — where they interact, where they get stuck, and where small changes in conditions produce different outputs.
The conditions the system operates under are not fixed.
There are five capability subsystems — resilience, meta-competence, connection, agency, resource stewardship. Each one changes what the mechanisms have to work with. Each one is a learnable skill set, with a dependency chain and a direction of travel.
Building them changes the inputs. The mechanisms do the rest.
The system is already running — in every decision made, every pattern repeated, every place where change doesn't stick.
The mechanisms in action — across individuals, relationships, organisations, and societies.
The architecture of the Soutar Schema — how it is built, what it contains, and where leverage lives.
